Short-wave infrared (SWIR) refers to the wavelength range between 900 and 2500 nm. In the short-wave infrared spectrum, material differences, moisture, coatings, and internal structures become visible that remain invisible in the visible spectrum. Ideal for demanding inspection tasks, SWIR lighting ensures stable, reproducible results and maximum process reliability in industrial image processing.

LUMIMAX® LED lighting - Shortwave Infrared (SWIR)

Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) refers to the wavelength range between 900 and 2500 nm – beyond the spectrum visible to the human eye. Similar to the visible spectrum, the photons are reflected or absorbed by objects to varying degrees. This long-wave radiation can be visualized using special SWIR cameras, usually with InGaAS sensor technology.

Advantages of the SWIR spectrum

The advantage over the visible spectrum lies in the different reflection and absorption behavior of many materials. Inconspicuous color or textural differences can be made clear for sorting processes such as plastic recycling or foreign body detection in the agricultural industry. Apparently opaque plastics can be screened for fill level checks in the food or pharmaceutical industry, as can silicon for wafer inspection in the semiconductor industry. With the right wavelength, the seemingly invisible can be made visible.

Some application examples

SWIR wafer inspection: helpful in detecting and identifying
cracks in silicon wafers.

SWIR lighting also helps with waste and plastic recycling. With SWIR, plastic types can be clearly distinguished according to the polymer type.

Liquid level check on opaque plastic containers:
In the SWIR, the plastics become predominantly transparent.

LUMIMAX® offers the powerful  high-power floodlights of the LQHP40 series with innovative SWIR LED technology. However, all other standard geometries can also be adapted on reque

Customers can chose of 9 different wavelengths between 980 nm and 1600 nm, so that the right wavelength is available for every application. The use of efficient LED technology instead of the conventional halogen lamps facilitates use in temperature-sensitive applications, for example in the food sector.
